Retirement Plans

Round Rock ISD participates in the Texas Teacher Retirement System and offers its employees voluntary participation in a 403(b) and 457(b) deferred compensation plans.

Round Rock ISD employees participate in the Texas Teacher Retirement System (TRS). TRS administers a defined benefit retirement plan that is a qualified pension trust under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. The pension trust fund provides service and disability retirement, as well as death and survivor benefits, to eligible Texas public education employees and their beneficiaries. Retirement benefits are financed by member and state contributions, employer contributions in some circumstances, and through investment earnings of the pension trust fund.

Texas Teacher Retirement System

To be eligible for membership in the state’s Teacher Retirement System (TRS), a person must be a paid employee of a public state-supported educational institution in Texas who works at least one-half of the standard workweek. That typically means that any employee of a public school district who works at least 20 hours per week more than five months of the year is eligible.

All Round Rock lSD employees participate in TRS, unless one of the following exceptions apply:

  • an employee works less than half time (bus drivers who drive at least one approved route are members of TRS);
    or a TRS retiree returns to work in a TRS-covered position.
  • Substitute service is not automatically reported to TRS. However, certified teachers who substitute 90 days or more in one year are eligible for substitute service credit (upon verification of service and payment of the deposits). Beginning in September 2001 employees with 50 days of state leave may purchase one additional year of service. The member must pay the actuarial benefits associated with the purchased credits.

Round Rock ISD participates in the Texas Teacher Retirement System as authorized by law. Learn additional information regarding your retirement plan with the Texas Teacher Retirement System.
