Texas Teacher Retirement System
To be eligible for membership in the state’s Teacher Retirement System (TRS), a person must be a paid employee of a public state-supported educational institution in Texas who works at least one-half of the standard workweek. That typically means that any employee of a public school district who works at least 20 hours per week more than five months of the year is eligible.
All Round Rock lSD employees participate in TRS, unless one of the following exceptions apply:
- an employee works less than half time (bus drivers who drive at least one approved route are members of TRS);
- or a TRS retiree returns to work in a TRS-covered position.
Substitute service is not automatically reported to TRS. However, certified teachers who substitute 90 days or more in one year are eligible for substitute service credit (upon verification of service and payment of the deposits). Beginning in September 2001 employees with 50 days of state leave may purchase one additional year of service. The member must pay the actuarial benefits associated with the purchased credits.
Medicare
Individuals employed by Round Rock ISD after March 31, 1986, contribute to the Medicare portion of Social Security and will be eligible for Medicare benefits at age 65. Members will receive an adjustment to the monthly health insurance premiums purchased through TRS upon Medicare eligibility.
