After extensive advocacy efforts, the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC), which serves as the licensing board for school psychologists, has unanimously approved a significant change. Now, a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP) holds the title of “school psychologist.” This adjustment came into effect in May 2023. School psychologists practicing in Texas have an LSSP credential.
“School psychologists play a crucial role in a functional and healthy school community,” said Marie Gonzales, Round Rock ISD Executive Director of Special Education. “The title change from LSSP to school psychologist provides more clarity to families and educational professionals.”
A school psychologist conducts evaluations and assessments to determine student eligibility for special education services. And they develop academic and behavior intervention plans and counseling as a related service.
Round Rock ISD staffs 31 school psychologists.
