Stop the Prop: propped open doors present a security risk

Propping open a door may be convenient, but it’s unsafe. An easy safety solution that does not require additional costs or technology is ensuring that campus or facility doors are properly latched and not propped open.

Doors propped open during and after school give outside threats easy access to your campus or office. When you properly close external doors, you take a critical step in protecting your safety and the safety of our students and your fellow co-workers.

Security cameras throughout the District have recorded instances of students and staff using rocks, garbage cans, and doormats to keep exterior doors propped open. Door propping is especially prevalent during after-school activities when access to our campuses is purposefully limited. If you see a door propped open, we encourage you to immediately remove the item(s) and close the door.

“We are all school safety,” said Dennis Weiner, Round Rock ISD Chief of Police. “Every employee can play a vital role in school safety by not propping doors open, closing propped open doors, and checking to see if doors properly shut behind you.”

Weiner also encourages staff members to report faulty push bars and doors that do not self-close or latch properly to their campus or department administrator.

If you have questions about propping campus and District facility doors, please email the Round Rock ISD Police Department.
